Co-founder of Mehelle project Rustin Zarkar will talk about beautification and urban planning in Baku, as part of a global trend. Mehelle is a media project is "dedicated to preserving the sights, sounds, and memories of rapidly-changing neighbourhoods". Sovetski neighbourhood, that has been majorly demolished in 2016 has been the first feature of Mehelle. Rustin will talk why they decided to focus on this neighbourhood particularly. He will explore what demolition of the neighbourhood meant in a larger scale: from the social, economic and environmental aspects. The talk will provide an idea on how visual tools can help to document changes in an urban environment and reflect on its impact on society. The talk will be in English

Through AjamMC, he co-founded Mehelle, a digital mapping initiative and archive focusing on beautification and urban planning in rapidly changing neighbourhoods across Eurasia. He is also a PhD candidate in Middle Eastern Studies at New York University.
